Inflexión/Turning Point refers to the transformation process that Spanish architecture is currently undergoing. Resilience, ecology and social values are issues examined by the 15 winning projects and 27 finalists of XII BEAU the 12th Spanish Architecture and Urbanism Biennial. The need for sustainable construction, revitalized urban centres, a transition from policies based on the recycling and reuse of existing structures and resources, are issues that embody this turning point. Alternative strategies for urban development, which are emerging among younger generations, envision a different perspective into the near future.

A basic aspect that has steered the intention of this biennial, directed by Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, has been the desire to transmit to society the importance and value of high quality architecture and urban planning for the definition and transformation of the cities and landscapes.

The exhibition designers ‘Taller de Casquería’ created the installation Live architecture which presents the winning and finalist projects from the 5 categories of XII BEAU, using CCTV (Closed Circuit Television), smartphones and digital screen capture images. It offers a panoptical understanding of contemporary Spanish architecture and can be read as an experiment in architectural communication. It highlights the different stages of activity of each project through the point of view of their users and visitors. The architecture is displayed with two conflicting rhythms: homogeneity and. Visitors can witness the passage of time in its real magnitude, appreciating the changes and nuances of a space.
